What is an LED driver
LED drivers are also known as LED power supplies or LED transformers. An LED strip driver is a device that regulates and provides the power used to “drive” the operation of an LED strip. It is a key component of LED circuits. LED drivers convert high alternating current (AC) voltage current into the constant direct current (DC) required by the LED. By adjusting the output according to the changing electrical characteristics of the LED strip as it heats up, the driver regulates the power supplied to the LED to a constant DC voltage (usually 12v or 24v), which is usually because the voltage of the LED strip is generally 12v Or 24v
Why do I need an LED strip driver?
LED driver is an indispensable part of LED circuit. Without an LED driver, the LED thermal runaway will occur and the circuit system LED will be damaged. Because the forward voltage (Vf) of high-power LEDs changes with temperature. Forward voltage is the number of volts required for an LED to conduct electricity and emit light. As the temperature increases, the forward voltage of the LED decreases, causing the LED to draw more current. The LED will continue to heat up and draw more current until the LED burns itself out, also known as thermal runaway. An LED driver is an independent power supply whose output matches the electrical characteristics of the LED. This helps avoid thermal runaway because the constant current LED driver compensates for changes in forward voltage while delivering a constant current to the LED.
How do I choose the right LED driver for my LED strip?
To choose the correct LED driver, you need to consider the following aspects.
#1 Output Voltage
The voltage required for your light strip. If they require 24 volts to operate, use 24 volt drives.
If using a constant current LED driver, check the LED’s current output (in amps or milliamperes), you should make sure the power produced by the driver is within the specified range for the strip.
Please note: for constant current drives, current range and voltage must be considered. For constant voltage drives, only the voltage range needs to be considered.
#2 Input voltage
Typically most LED drivers can accept a range of input voltages. Please make sure the voltage available at your location is compatible with the drive you are using.
Most household voltages are not the same as industrial voltages. If you are unsure, consult your electrician.
When dealing with constant current LEDs, also consider their current input. Please make sure the operating current of your strip is compatible with the driver you are using.
#3 Wattage
Calculate the total wattage of all light strips you use and make sure your driver’s maximum wattage capability is greater than this.
Do not use a driver with a light that exceeds its maximum wattage or uses less than 50% of its maximum wattage.
#4 Waterproof rating
Does your drive need to be waterproof? If you are installing LED strips outdoors or in a humid environment, you need to consider using a waterproof LED driver. IP65 waterproof drivers are best suited for protecting low-pressure water from any direction, such as kitchens and bathrooms. The IP 67 waterproof driver protects against water immersion to a depth of 15cm to 1m, making it ideal for outdoor use.
#5 Dimming
Both constant current and constant voltage LED drivers can have dimming capabilities, but the dimming capability must be noted in the dimmer’s specifications, otherwise it is safe to assume that the system is not dimmable.
