Introduction
When people are choosing an LED strip, most of them will pay attention to the led chip, such as SMD5050, SMD2835, SMD3014, and also the color temperature and CRI. But the PCB behind the LEDs also plays an important part in overall performance.
The PCB is the workhorse of the LED strip. It conducts current, joins up all components and directly affects heat dissipation, voltage drop, flexibility and lifetime. In this article, we are going to focus on LED strip PCB copper thickness and will help you understand how to choose the right PCB.

What Is LED Strip PCB Copper Thickness?
The copper thickness of LED strip PCB is the thickness of copper layer within the PCB. It’s usually measured in ounces (oz) like .5oz , 1oz , 2oz , or 3oz . The higher the oz value the thicker the copper layer.
The copper layer carries the current through the LED strip, thus the thickness directly affects conductivity, voltage drop, heat dissipation and overall performance.
Why Copper Thickness Matters in LED Strip PCB?
The copper thickness is important for LED strip PCB performance. Thicker copper improves electrical conductivity , reduces voltage drop and helps current flow more efficiently .
It also helps in heat dissipation , decreases LED temperature and increases LED life. Thicker copper also makes the PCB more durable and reliable for high current applications.
The common thickness of copper on PCB is 1oz, 2oz and 3oz. High power and long run LED strips generally use thicker copper for better performance.
In the market:
1 year warranty LED strips usually use 0.5oz or 0.7oz PCB.
3 year warranty strips commonly use 2oz PCB.
5 year warranty products often use 3oz PCB.
High efficiency and long run constant current LED strips usually use 3oz PCB for better performance and reliability.

Single Layer vs Double Layer PCB
In the above picture, A & E are solder masks, C is PCB’s substrate. B and D are copper layers, which is the most important part of the LED strip PCB.
| Type | Structure | Advantages | Applications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single Layer PCB | One copper layer | Lower cost, flexible | Low power LED strips |
| Double Layer PCB | Two copper layers | Better conductivity, better heat dissipation | High power, long run LED strips |
Double Layer PCB
If B >0µm & D >0µm we call it double layer PCB, the circuit can be designed on both B and D there are several types double layer PCB in the market, most common is:
1. B=18µm, D=18µm, 0.5 ounces LED strip
2. B=25µm, D=25µm, 0.7 ounces LED strip
3. B=35µm, D=35µm, 2 ounces LED strip
4. B=25µm, D=50µm, 2 ounces LED strip
5. B=35µm, D=50µm, 3 ounces LED strip
Double layer PCB uses copper on both sides of the PCB substrate. This design provides better conductivity, lower resistance, better heat dissipation ,higher mechanical strength and longer running distance.
For high density LED strips, high power LED strips, and long run LED strips, double layer PCB is usually the better option.
Single Layer PCB
If B =0µm & D >0µm, then it is a single layer PCB, the circuit can only run on the D layer.
Single layer PCB has only one copper circuit layer, so its current carrying capacity is more limited. This is common in low power or budget LED strips.
0.5oz Vs 2oz Vs 3oz PCB
| Copper Thickness | Voltage Drop | Brightness Stability | Long Run Performance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0.5oz | High | Uneven | Not suitable |
| 2oz | Medium | Stable | Medium distance |
| 3oz | Low | Very stable | Long distance |
Is 3oz PCB Better Than 2oz PCB?
3oz PCB is better than 2oz PCB in terms of conductivity, voltage drop and heat dissipation. But it costs more and is less flexible, so 2oz PCB is used in most commercial lighting projects widely.
Does Thicker PCB Improve Heat Dissipation?
Yes, thicker copper PCB improves heat dissipation by spreading heat more efficiently along the strip, which lowers LED temperature and increases stability and lifespan.
Why High Quality LED Strips Use Thick Copper PCB?
High quality LED strips use thick copper PCB as it has better conductivity and lower voltage drop and better heat dissipation. This helps to maintain stable brightness, better reliability and longer life of the LED strip especially in long run and high power applications.
PCB Color of LED strip
LED performance is not directly impacted by the color of the PCB, which reflects the solder mask material, manufacturing process and product positioning.
Most of the LED strips on the market have white, black or yellow PCB colors.
The most common type is a white PCB. It has good light reflection, stable performance and widely used for indoor lighting applications.
Black PCB is frequently used for high-end or decorative LED strips. It has a premium look and is often used in architectural lighting or dark background installations.
Yellow is the natural color of FR4 substrate material, and it can be found in basic or low-cost LED strip products.
The color of the PCB is generally a function of the appearance and position of the product and is not related to the LED brightness or electrical performance.Actual performance depends on copper thickness, PCB structure and LED parts.
How to Choose the Right PCB Copper Thickness
When choosing the copper thickness of the PCB for LED light strips, the following four aspects should be considered:
1. Installation Length
Length determines how far current can travel without voltage drop. For short and low power installations under 3 meters, 1oz PCB is usually sufficient. But 3–7 meter runs need at least 2 oz to prevent the far end from looking dimmer. Beyond 7 meters, use 2–3 oz or inject power at both ends for uniform brightness.
2. Heat Dissipation Environment
Copper PCB plays an important role in heat dissipation. Poor airflow or direct sunlight means you should go one level thicker. Thicker copper pulls heat away faster, which slows down brightness loss and extends strip life.
3. Bending Frequency
Frequent bending requires thin, flexible copper, so you should use copper at 1 oz or less because thicker copper becomes stiff and cracks over time. For fixed installations that don’t move, standard copper at any thickness is perfectly fine.
4. Strip Type
Different strip constructions affect copper needs. COB strips usually use double-sided PCB with two 1 oz layers, which acts like 2 oz. Standard SMD strips can handle 1-2 oz, but for ultra narrow strips less than 5 mm, etching constraints limit you to a max of 1 oz.

Understanding how LED strip PCBs are built will help you pick the right product for better performance, less voltage drop and longer lifespan.
